ISU Student Experience

ISU Student Experience Begins

Stephanie Jensen, RVT reviews a patient's symptoms and treatment plan with ISU Vet Med students.

After last year's successful student experience, Iowa Veterinary Specialties is again hosting a program that allows veterinary students from Iowa State University's College of Veterinary Medicine to gain emergency and specialty experience.

This year we've started a program that allows vet tech students to experience emergency and specialty medicine. Students enrolled in the vet tech programs at DMACC and North East Iowa Community College were chosen to participate in the program. We also are hosting one intern from Iowa State University's Animal Science department.

Because of the success of last year's program, Iowa Veterinary Specialties made available 6 more positions within Student Experience Program. Like last year, students will be rotating through our Emergency and Specialty departments. Each group of students will shadow doctors in Iowa Veterinary Specialties' Emergency (both day and overnight), Internal Medicine, Oncology, Dermatology, Ophthalmology departments. Students will also learn about canine blood banking and blood products. Students will also experience important aspects of hospital management and administration. Students will experience the roles that make a hospital run smoothly. The students will spend time with our reception staff, as well as learn about hospital inventory, veterinary marketing, hospital management, invoice auditing, human resources and financial aspects of practice management.

Iowa Veterinary Specialties is excited for this year's crew to experience our Specialty and Emergency departments. The combination of doctor Q&A and some hands-on learning will help foster a learning experience available only at Iowa Veterinary Specialties. We're proud to help familiarize our future veterinarians with Emergency and Specialty Medicine, and expect to work closely with them in the future after earning their respective degrees.

Good Luck Students!
