ISU Student Experience

Angela Bryan

Angela recently completed her first year of veterinary school at Iowa State University and is now looking forward to her second!  Before veterinary school, Angela completed her Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Animal Science at Iowa State University.   Also prior to veterinary school, she gained experience in the veterinary field working with a canine research colony at Iowa State University and interning with the Avondale Veterinary Healthcare Complex of Des Moines, Iowa.  Upon graduation from veterinary school, she plans to practice small animal medicine, hopefully within either an emergency or specialty clinic similar to Iowa Veterinary Specialties.

“During my time within the Iowa Veterinary Specialties Emergency/Specialty Mentorship Program, I feel as though I was provided with the perfect opportunity to see things through the eyes of the veterinarian.  Prior to the mentorship, I felt comfortable completing technical tasks such as blood draws and placing intravenous catheters; however, this mentorship forced me to step away from technician duties and begin considering how to make a diagnosis.  Within this position, I also had the opportunity to interact with clients and became much more comfortable working one-on-one with them and their pets.  One of the things I enjoyed most was speaking with the clients, listening to their concerns, taking those concerns to the doctor, and following through with the treatment, recovery, and discharge of their pets!  Overall, Iowa Veterinary Specialties gave me the opportunity to view veterinary medicine from many different perspectives, and I am truly grateful for every minute I had with them!”
