Dr. Amy Fertig joins Iowa Veterinary Specialties as Medical Director with more than two decades of experience in emergency and critical care medicine, veterinary education, and organizational leadership. Having served as a clinician, educator, program director, and medical leader, Dr. Fertig brings a steady, systems?focused approach to strengthening clinical standards, supporting teams, and rebuilding trust with referring veterinarians across the Des Moines community.
Dr. Fertig has a long history of collaboration with Iowa State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine and is committed to deepening IVS’s partnership with the Veterinary Teaching Hospital to help train the next generation of DVMs. Her leadership philosophy centers on clarity, communication, and accountability — creating environments where clinicians feel supported, clients feel confident, and referring veterinarians know their patients will receive consistent, high?quality care.
With a focus on stability, transparency, and shared purpose, Dr. Fertig looks forward to working alongside IVS clinicians, staff, and community partners to grow IVS into a thriving, trusted specialty and emergency resource for central Iowa.
